Learn to Work with Your Co-Workers. In the world of home health many clinicians feel that they are out on their own without support. This could not be more untrue. The support is available, all you have to do is use it.
We have clinical supervisors, leads, and co-workers of various disciplines. Our co-workers can be one of our most valuable assets. There can be so much benefit from discussing patient cases with other disciplines. Sometimes a nurse can give you information about an activity that the patient enjoys that you can turn into a successful treatment plan. Or a social worker can assist you with communication with a patients family and facilitating getting MD orders. Other therapists that are on your team can also be of assistance. They may not have specific knowledge about your case, but they will be able to provide you with their clinical expertise. It is ok to ask for help when you feel you need it and to communicate with your colleagues regarding patient care. As new grads, therapists are worried about working in the field of home health because of a lack of mentorship. From personal experience as new graduates entering the world of home health, we can attest that mentorship and relationships with your co-workers are in fact as much a part of home health as they are in any other job. We may not see our co-workers daily, although sometimes we do have run ins, but we are able to communicate via phone calls and emails. We have become friends with many of our co-workers. It may take a little bit more effort since we don’t see them everyday, but establishing working relationships and friendships is possible. After all, Hacking Home Health began from one of these friendships.
